Checking On The In-Laws
« on: June 01, 2017, 12:56:48 AM »
Elrond knew that there was nothing more he could have done. If Galadriel hadn’t been able to foresee her daughter’s capture and then departure, then there was little chance that he could have known either. He had been by her side the moment she had been brought back near death and tortured, both physically and mentally, by the twins, and hardly left it. Only when Celeborn or Galadriel physically moved him from her side and force him to his bed did he get any sleep, and he rarely ate during that time unless he was forced to, which was unfortunately rather often.

Yet, while he had spent the last year dealing with the lack of Celebrian after his wife sailed, he knew that he wasn’t the only one suffering. Elrohir, Elladan, and Arwen were, especially Arwen. All of Imladris was suffering alongside their Lord and his children. Yet so too were Celebrian’s parents. It was for this reason that he headed towards Caras Galadhon, with a large entourage of guards to ensure his safety. He could sense Glorfindel’s concerned eyes on him but he ignored them. He was met with Haldir, who bowed when he saw Elrond. ”I wish to speak with the Lord and Lady.” Haldir nodded. ”I believe Lord Celeborn is at one of the settlements near the Anduin. But Lady Galadriel is expecting you, Lord Elrond.” Elrond nodded and let Haldir lead him towards where his mother-in-law was waiting.

Though the presence of her golden-haired cousin usually elicited a warm response from Galadriel, there was little offered Glorfindel beyond the briefest of smiles before Galadriel, appearing from the steps on high, turned a rather sharp gaze to her son-in-law.

Not, of course, that he was unwelcome. Never that, and hardly when the past -- all too near, all too real thing that it still was -- was...what it was.

The Lady of the Galadhrim was still beautiful. She had not been shriven of such acclaim in Middle Earth, despite what had been inflicted upon her. That was the lot of Elves, after all, or most.

But.

Now, lines, fine as spider webs, not those that had crinkled the corners of her gaze when she laughed freely, were present against the finer contours of her eyes. Few occurrences could mar the beauty of the Elves, and all could be counted in the annals of history on one hand (and likely a few exaggerated at that). But for Galadriel, it seemed that finally, tragedy had marred her soul enough for it to reflect outwardly, no matter how small. A mother grieving the tragedy of her child, how very right...in such very wrong circumstances.

It had not, however, dimmed, the intensity of her gaze, which had turned swiftly from her cousin to regard Elrond with impassive intensity. An impassiveness only fooled, it seemed, by her reluctance to come down the stairs quickly to greet him, even as her voice was level as still water.

"Where are the children, Elrond?"

While Elrond was still grieving his wife, there was little denying that his wife's mother was beautiful, and while she got much of her coloring from Celeborn, there were plenty of features that came from Galadriel. And despite everything, there was still something about seeing her that took his breath away, much like it had when he had first seen her that he could remember as a child. And so he bowed his head and the upper part of his torso towards her in respect. While he bore the most powerful of the Three, in most ways she was still far more powerful than he was.

Yet his eyes snapped up to her at her questioning of where her grandchildren, his children, were. He frowned, only partly at her. ”Last I saw the twins, they had gone on their self-imposed mission to rid Arda of orcs. And I should be asking you the same about Arwen since I did send her here without you after her mother sailed.” His voice could have been sharp but was more tired and weary. Perhaps he needed rest and healing in Lothlorien even if his purpose in coming here was to check on how his father and mother-in-law were doing.

He gave a searching look, as if she were a patient he was looking for an injury on. ”And how does Lady Galadriel fare?” Perhaps she might guess his purpose for coming here but he found that he could honestly care less at the moment. A weakness he was sure Celeborn would use before too long, he thought ruefully.

"And you let them?"

The fact that her voice was so sharp, the words they were couched in almost harping, answered Elrond's queries to the state of the Lady in question far more than any other answer might have. Galadriel had long, long ago learned to trade impetuousness for consideration, bluntness for a caring, if no less sincere, honesty...and when it suited her, ambush over forward engagement. None of which was intended towards Elrond, certainly not when he looked so faded, and most definitely not considering the circumstances of their last meeting together--

Celebrian.

Her nose tickled at the mere thought of her daughter even as she all but prowled down the stairs in accusation, every syllable of her name a resounding thud grating at the base of her threat, deeply felt in that place where the heart settled below the collar bone. But Galadriel did not give sway to her whims, no matter how painful-- no matter how the guilt weighed upon her. The guilt of a parent for not being there, the guilt of being unable to weep for the sake of her grieving, shattered husband, and worse than all of them, the guilt that she'd never share: the wish that Celebrian might have died, and at least been spared enduring the prolonged horror of her kidnap.

That one nearly undid her once again, but Galadriel steeled herself. Made the choice instead to turn the weakness into strength, the sadness of it to kindness when she reached the foot of the stairs so that she stood before Elrond. 'There's nothing to be gained from being hard to one another. What's done has been done.' There was no apology spoken; there rarely was aloud when engaging with the Lady of the Galadhrim, but there was a manner in which her shoulders relaxed (almost sloping wearily), the intensity in her eyes quieted (almost tired) as she regarded her son in law, that spoke all on it's own.

"Life goes on, whether we wish it to or not. I must go along with it." She cast a hand in the direction he'd come, the other finding the crook of his elbow-- another gesture for an apology that would amount to nothing if given aloud. "Arwen spends time with friends her age, and I am quite wanting to indulge my baser longings."

Her eyes glinted, for just a moment, in play. "Anything with vanilla and cinnamon to it, of course."

There were several long moments that made Elrond question his long held, if joking, assertion that og his in-laws, Celeborn was the scarier of the two. It had originally been because the silver-haired Elf had seemed almost discouraging of his courtship of Celebrian while his wife seemed to welcome him and because he had seen his father-in-law’s skill with weaponry. But the sharpness of her voice made him start to question that, especially when combined with the fact that she bore one of the Three. ”I could hardly stop them from going. I’m not sure what they would do if they could not do it.” And her stalking towards him made him take an small involuntary step back.

But then something shifted and his brow furrowed in concern as his mother-in-law further approached him, a little wary of her intentions. Her body language showed her sorrow and weariness, likely more than she had planned on letting show. He had the distinct feeling that the only one she completely let down her guard with was Celeborn. She did not apologize to him for her tone of voice but he knew her well enough to know that her softened posture and gaze was apology enough. And his response to her unspoken apology was a barely perceivable nod.

Her hand slipped into the crook of his elbow and he gazed down out at her, gaze soft and concerned. They both had their emotional scars from his wife’s (and her daughter) capture and sailing. ”And you still have your spouse to enjoy life with. I must wait until I can sail to feel whole again.” While his tone was sad, it had more of a wistful edge to it than anything else. At hearing Arwen was spending time with friends her age, he gave a genuinely happy smile.”That is very good to hear. Is she doing well?” He was not entirely sure how to reaction to Galadriel’s words about indulging her baser longings, eyes a little wide. ”Plans for tea, then?”

'And you still have your spouse to enjoy life with.'

Worn thin as she was not only with the grief of a mother's loss, but with the same anguish and guilt shared with her Lord Celeborn, Galadriel wasn't quite sure what miracle it was that stayed her tongue. Whether Elrond had meant them to sting with the comparison of who's grief was greater or not was a moot; it had come out as exactly that to the Lady's ears, and it appalled her enough so that the aforementioned Lord might very well have felt it emanate across their centuries long bond even if he were not paying overt attention at the present from wherever he might be.

'Yes, I have Celeborn still. But we have lost our only child.'

Yet she is not dead, either.

Though the urge to strike out once again was overwhelming, Galadriel forced herself to attribute the thoughtlessness of the statement in the end to the stress Elrond had been under, remembered for the sake of her sweet-tempered daughter, damaged but still living, forgiveness for one's own sake was as precious as it was to others, and so she refrained from the remark so tempting on the tip of her tongue. Instead, her companion was given a cool smile in response, barely a beat missed.

Finrod would have been so proud of her for that.

"Yes, tea. Lest you'd prefer to take your ease in solitude?"

Although Elrond had not her husband’s ability or long marriage to his mother-in-law that allowed to him to know her thoughts moods, Elrond knew Galadriel well enough to tell that she had tamped down a rather uncomplimentary reaction to his words, words that he had not meant to lessen her sorrow. He had only meant it to explain a little of his own sorrow at missing his wife. Yet even her lack of a reaction was telling enough and he winced at the words she had left unspoken.

He frowned slightly at her not answering his question about his youngest child was doing. He had suggested that Arwen be with her grandparents and escape the anger from her brothers and self-wallowing from her father. There were many times that Elrond was thankful that the Valar had sent Glorfindel back to Middle Earth since the gentle warrior seemed almost unflappable, which he supposed was natural when one took down several Balrogs and a Dragon single-handedly. He certain kept an eye on all the Peredhil and also took care of minor things with the help of Erestor. There was an amused thought that floated through his thoughts that between the two of them, they ran Imladris almost as well as he did.

But he would not press the Lady of Lorien on how his daughter was doing. Galadriel agreed tea was just the thing but offered him his solitude. He shook his head gently. ”No, I would appreciate the company.”

So often had she led and others followed, in many a path, time and situation. And while it did not particularly burden her; indeed, Galadriel had chosen from the very beginning of her time in Middle Earth, perhaps even before then, to not only allow herself to be gravitated to, but foster such a turning to her in times of turmoil and ill-guidance, that did not mean that it had never wearied her. It was the price of being great, with or without the pound of flesh extracted that was being as a Ring-bearer was.

Though perhaps, really, that was why her friend had cut so deeply into her with his words. Elrond was not infallible, but he was one of the Eldar, and one of the few Galadriel had ever suspected would fall into playing off the 'who's experience was more painful' game that many succumbed to and few ever had the wisdom to rise above. Where callous, if pained, words were concerned, she understood their fundamental roots-- though knowing did little to make the sting of emotion less. It was disappointing; he was wiser than this...wise enough to have known better, and to know better now than to expect his lapse towards her to be brushed aside.

(Though perhaps, a small part of her acknowledged, she was expecting too much given the traumatic, guilt-ridden loss they had sustained-- painfully recent by the standards of memory set by any of the free races.)

Thus, while she inclined her head at his desire for company, certainly didn't refute it, the formality of it where easiness, if not open warmth, was usually present, was telling. It was telling more than ever now, it seemed and even as she mounted the steps (bare-footed, usually amusing, but a comfortable habit clearly put to use despite the earliness of the day for just that: self-comfort) to lead him to the arbour where tea would be waiting (elven attendants being the surreptitious, observant creatures they were), for open warmth was a trait distinctly come from the mother to the daughter and wife now sailing, fate unknown, for Valinor.

It was an unknown fate that would haunt the darker, shifting depths of Galadriel's sea-coloured gaze to her dying day, or her own departure, should she survive to see it. As many things would, most used to guide the world before her time faded, but none quite so deeply personal.

"Arwen is well," she said finally, though still with telling politeness. Seating herself easily on the cushions before the low table, Galadriel smoothed her skirt over crossed legs still rangy and strong as any ellon's, little changed in the passing millennia aside from the occasional extra ache not spoken of in polite company that came from no longer being able to swim and ride and climb as she'd once had the freedom to do, in those troubled but golden days of Doriath.

"But we both know you could have sought her out yourself, if it was your intention."

***

[I'm so sorry we're gonna need your expert skills because she's prepared to wait him out and thus be thoroughly not talkative xD].
