NAME:  Faramir.
TRILOGY:  The Lord of the Rings.
DATE OF BIRTH AND AGE (AS OF T.A. 3019):  10th of March, T.A. 2983 (36 years old).
PLACE OF BIRTH:  Minas Tirith, Gondor.
RACE:  Man.
GENDER:  Male.

HAIR COLOUR AND APPEARANCE:  Faramir’s hair is strawberry-blond in colour and is wavy and soft to the touch.  Generally kept long enough to tickle his shoulders, though cut shorter around his face for practicality, it falls into a messy centre parting.  His facial hair – worn in a short, neat beard – is of the same shade as his locks.

EYE COLOUR:  Pale blue, made bright by his spirit.  Faramir’s eyes are a window into his soul, ever kindly and often revealing a sorrowful sort of wisdom.

BODY TYPE AND HEIGHT:  Tall and noble in his bearing, Faramir stands at 6’4”, the same height as his beloved elder brother.  He is narrower in the shoulders than Boromir, however, and could never hope to match his sibling in physical strength.  His body is toned, his muscles defined, his hands dexterous and his tread light.  In short, Faramir’s build makes him a formidable Ranger.

OVERALL APPEARANCE:  Being of noble birth, Faramir always dons garments of quality.  For formal occasions, he possesses a sumptuous blue tunic with quilted sleeves that is often paired with a steel chest plate embossed with the White Tree of Gondor – this armour, for all its finery, has seen battle – and a blue, fur-trimmed cloak.  Faramir is most at home in his Ranger gear, however, as it is well-worn and familiar.  Green and brown in colour, this uniform is camouflaged and durable.  The garb consists of fingerless leather gauntlets, vambraces, a green cloak, a leather jerkin – emblazoned with the White Tree of Gondor – pulled over a green tunic with tan detailing and quilted sleeves, dark grey-brown breeches, a black snood which is drawn up over his face during ambushes and is finished with fitted lace-up boots that are often mud-splattered.

DISTINGUISHING MARKS:   Surprisingly, for one familiar with combat, Faramir’s body carries few distinguishing marks.  There are of course a smattering of scars on his hands, arms and chest but none are of particular note.   By the end of the War of the Ring, this will have changed.  For now, the most striking of Faramir’s features is his strawberry-blond hair.

WEAPONS:  As a Ranger of Ithilien, Faramir carries a sword, a longbow and a nail-knife.  His sword is a thing of subtle beauty, loved and looked after, with its handle wrapped in a dark green leather that complements his garments – its wooden scabbard also comes in a matching shade – and features a straight crossguard and steel scent-topper pommel.  Whilst adept with both sword and bow, his skill with the former is far surpassed by that of his brother.  The bow is Faramir’s preferred weapon and, luckily, it is also the most useful during an organised ambush.

FACE CLAIM:  David Wenham.

STRENGTHS:  Much of the Ranger’s solidity can be found in his personality and strength of character.  He is intuitive, intelligent, thoughtful and capable; he is both loved and respected by his men.  Faramir possesses considerable bravery, as one would expect of the Captain of Ithilien, and he is both capable of managing his company and developing effective strategies.  In terms of combat, his strength lies in his stealth and his skill with a bow – abilities that are inherent amongst the Rangers of Ithilien.  His tread is soft and sure, he has the long-fingered hands of an archer, his eyes are bright and his aim keen.  Faramir is also gifted with foresight, his visions coming to him unbidden in his dreams.

WEAKNESSES:  Faramir is quietly plagued by feelings of low self-worth, due to his father’s ill treatment of him, though he tries his best to rise above such negativity and remains an unwaveringly dutiful son.  This desperation for Denethor’s approval could certainly be considered a weakness, for it is one of the few things that can force Faramir to go against his better judgement.

ASPIRATIONS:  Beyond earning his father’s approval, Faramir wishes to always be true to himself, to have honour and kindness define him.  He also hopes to always inspire – and deserve – his brother’s love and loyalty.  On a less personal note, he aspires to see Gondor returned to her former glory, the darkness that lingers on her borders pushed back or, better yet, destroyed.

FEARS:  Forever being a disappointment to Denethor.  In his lowest moments, Faramir also fears baselessly and needlessly that his father’s disdain of him will somehow infect Boromir.

“But things may change when Faramir returns. He is bold, more bold than many deem; for in these days men are slow to believe that a captain can be wise and learned in the scrolls of lore and song, as he is, and yet a man of hardihood and swift judgement in the field. But such is Faramir. Less reckless and eager than Boromir, but not less resolute.” – spoken by Beregond in ‘Minas Tirith’, The Lord of the Rings:  The Return of the King

Many of Faramir’s traits are befitting a Captain; he is kind, selfless, loyal, quietly courageous, unwavering, decisive and honourable.  A fair and merciful leader, talented in combat and strategic planning, his morals are what guide him, helping Faramir make sense of the world and guarantee that his word is his bond.  This could very well be the reason he inspires confidence and admiration amongst his men.

While many have measured him against Boromir, and found him lacking, Faramir feels no ounce of jealousy and even in the current day continues to look up to his ‘big brother’.  In fact, he is exceedingly close to Boromir, who is his dearest friend and confidant as well as his beloved only sibling.  Faramir is one who nurtures close, meaningful relationships and, being both intuitive and shrewd, he possesses an uncanny ability to read others.

A sensitive creature, Faramir harbours a great love of lore and music and, despite being a Ranger, he cares little for war and arms.  To him, it is a means to an end, one that is entirely necessary.  Having no desire for glory, he will not risk his life – or the lives of his men – without due cause.  Gentle, modest and fair-minded, he values life and has an ability to see the best in others.

Faramir was born in T.A. 2983, five years after Boromir, to Denethor II and Finduilas.  When he was only a year old, his grandfather Ecthelion II died and his father succeeded as the Ruling Steward of Gondor.  A tiny babe, Faramir was too young to feel the bitter sting of loss, though he was destined to know grief early – at the tender of age of five, his kindly mother passed away.  This prompted a terrible change in Denethor, who became distant and ill-tempered.  Lost and full of sorrow, it was Boromir who comforted Faramir and it was Boromir who was to remain steady and loving in the years to come.

Denethor made it abundantly clear that Boromir was the heir and that he, Faramir, was nothing more than the spare.  A very disappointing spare at that.  Nothing the lad did was ever enough, no achievement winning him a kind word, and he soon learned to yield and say nothing in retaliation.  Luckily Boromir was there, kind and encouraging, shielding him from the worst of their father’s ire and always helping him as best he could.  If Denethor meant to inspire rivalry between the brothers, he failed miserably, for his meanness only brought them closer together.  Faramir is indescribably grateful to his elder sibling and even as an adult continues to openly admire him.

Growing up, the brothers trained and sparred.  Seemingly endless days with Boromir are Faramir’s fondest memories, whether they were spent with wooden swords in hand or playing hide and seek in the halls of their grand home.  When the time came to put away childish things, Faramir began to excel at archery though he remained an inherently gentle spirit.  His nature alienated his father further, as did the friendship he nurtured with Gandalf the Grey on his occasional visits to Minas Tirith.  Learning much of the realm’s history from the Wizard, Faramir came to admire him, while Denethor resolutely disapproved and resented the mentor-mentee relationship they developed.

In June T.A. 3018, Sauron’s forces – under the command of the fear-inducing Witch-king – attacked Osgiliath.  The soldiers withdrew, fleeing across the Anduin.  Boromir and Faramir commanded the defence, their companies bravely protecting the last bridge until it was finally destroyed.  Only they, and two other soldiers, survived by swimming to the shore.  United with the remaining troops, they were able to secure and hold the western shores.  It was the night before this terrible assault that Faramir had a prophetic dream, a disembodied voice uttering the following:

Seek for the Sword that was broken:
In Imladris it dwells;
There shall be counsels taken
Stronger than Morgul-spells.
There shall be shown a token
That Doom is near at hand,
For Isildur's Bane shall waken,
And the Halfling forth shall stand.

This dream would recur twice and then later present itself to his brother.  The brothers took the decision to inform their father of this vision.  Faramir was determined to do as the voice instructed and was initially selected by the Council of Elders to make the journey – he was the spare, after all – but Boromir intervened out of concern for his brother.  Faramir was ordered to remain behind and defend Gondor.  Already Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien, he also inherited Boromir’s position of Captain of the White Tower in his absence.

With the weight of responsibility rounding his shoulders, Faramir commands and defends Gondor to the best of his ability.  He misses his brother terribly and fears for his safety.
